  • Sink hole

Yesterday as I was walking east of the house I found a hole. It wasn't very big but it was deep.  Turns out it is the old well from years ago.

Had to be filled so Bud and Nelson got to work on it this morning. Nelson dug at it a bit to see what was up.

    This is what he found.

And this is how they fixed it.

  • Drunken kitties

I was in the checkout lane at Walmart today and saw a kitty toy. It was a scratching post, catnip, funny feather sort of toy. And of course since Christmas has come and gone it was half price. Couldn't resist.

Got it home, opened it up, sprinkled the catnip and here we go! Thomas, Sophia and Felix checking it out.

Felix, being the senior cat, got first dibs.

Sammy showed up and tried to get a turn but Felix wouldn't budge.

So Sam decided to chew on the feather for a while. And now it looks like this.

Then Bucer's got in on the fun.

And a Happy New Year's evening was had by all. Even if Sophia had to wait for Sam to finish.

  • Early garden pictures

Just in case my garden gets blown away tonight I thought I put up some pictures.

Here is Treebeard with his hostas.  Treebeard lost an eye last year and is now piratey.  The lovely oriental bowl is outside because a certain cat is convinced it's a toilet when it's inside.

These are the miniature hollyhocks that Becky gave me few years ago.  They are thriving.

The lilies in Katie's garden are blooming, but not in mine yet.  There are plenty of buds though.

    Katie's roses.

Hostas.  All those green things are little wild violets.  They are beautiful and spread like wildfire.  I try to keep them contained to this little area.

The bluebird apartment.  The couple in residence is working on their second brood of the year.  First one has already left the nest!  The purple martins are just beyond the garden, and we also have gold finch, blue indigo buntings and hummingbirds.  I even saw some cardinals this morning.   For a yard that has seven cats, that's not bad!

This is the only chicken that is welcome in the garden.  The others are run out every afternoon around 4:00.  At least they keep a schedule so I know when to check.

    The village fence.

    And the Idaho Rocks.

A shot from the southwest corner.  Not a lot blooming yet, but the clematis is already starting to fade.

    May 2011 026

I quit picking the asparagus.  Last year I picked too long and didn't get as much growing back as I should have.  This year I opted to not over pick and give it a chance of coming back stronger.

I sit here a lot during the day.  Good spot to think and have coffee.
